The Club online

Since the UK Lockdown in March-2020, our Club has had to take its activities online. Most of our Members are now playing chess using various websites or apps. Not only that, but together with some former members and associates we are engaging in formal and not-so-formal team competitions as well as individual tournaments. These are are run by our Online Director and multiple team captain, Neil Owen.

Come and join us! You will find many familiar names from the West Midlands chess scene both on our side and playing against us as well as players from around England and beyond. Notably, our Club can sometimes field titled players like FM Jonah Willow, IM Brandon Clarke and IM Ameet Ghasi.

To show what is available and to get you started, here are the principal websites involving Sutton Coldfield Chess Club. You may need to join both Lichess and Chess.com for the full range of Club activities.

Lichess

Lichess is entirely free and ad-free; there simply is no premium or paid membership. Sign up here...

Also, a free Lichess app is available on Google Play and from all the other usual places.

Chess.com

Chess.com is free, but carries ads and has paid membership for extras. It is more popular than Lichess, but some find its interface more bloated and harder to navigate. Note that the same player's chess.com rating might typically be 200 or 300 points lower than his Lichess rating. Sign up here...
